Canada announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, responding to the latest round of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump after U.S.-Canada trade talks broke down.
The new Canadian measures will cover more than 700 American products and are worth roughly $20 billion. The tariffs range from 15% to 50% and will affect imports including dairy products, seafood, appliances, clothing, wood and paper goods.
Canada will impose a 50% tariff on U.S. steel and aluminum, doubling the existing rate. Ottawa said the move is intended to counter previous U.S. tariffs targeting Canadian metals, lumber and other products.
“When the United States of America asked too much and offered too little, we made a choice. We chose Canada,” Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at a press conference Tuesday morning.
The new tariffs are scheduled to take effect September 8. Canada also announced a separate $7.5 billion support package to help businesses and workers affected by the escalating trade dispute.
