John Sterling, the longtime radio voice of the New York Yankees, has died at the age of 87. He spent parts of 36 seasons calling Yankees games, becoming one of the most recognizable voices in baseball broadcasting.
Over the course of his career, Sterling called 5,420 regular-season games and 211 postseason games before retiring in April 2024, shortly after the start of the season. He also broadcast 5,060 consecutive games from September 1989 through July 2019, a remarkable streak spanning nearly three decades.
Sterling was behind the microphone for 24 Yankees postseason appearances, including seven World Series trips, and he called five World Series championship victories during his tenure.
