Marty Makary is stepping down as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after serving in the role for 13 months.
Kyle Diamantas, who previously served as the agency’s top food official, will take over as acting commissioner.
According to a senior administration official, plans for Makary’s departure had been developing for months. His tenure at the FDA included widespread layoffs, frequent leadership turnover, and ongoing disputes with lawmakers, pharmaceutical companies, and Donald Trump.
Speaking Tuesday before departing for China, Trump described Makary as “a great guy” and “a friend.” “Marty’s a terrific guy, but he’s going to go on and he’s going to lead a good life,” Trump said. “He was having some difficulty.”
