In a developing public health situation, a multi-state listeria outbreak has resulted in 28 hospitalizations and two fatalities across the United States. The outbreak has affected individuals in 12 states, with confirmed cases in both New Jersey and Illinois where the two reported deaths occurred.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively investigating the outbreak's source but has identified a common factor among many of the affected individuals. According to the CDC, “Many of the people who are affected by the outbreak have been reported to have eaten meats that they had sliced at deli counters.”
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for listeriosis, is commonly found in a variety of foods. While it often causes only mild intestinal illness with symptoms such as fever, nausea, diarrhea, muscle aches, and vomiting, listeriosis can lead to more severe health issues. If left untreated, it may progress to cause headaches, a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
The CDC notes that listeria can be particularly persistent and challenging to eliminate because it can grow at refrigerator temperatures and spread easily between surfaces and food products. However, high-temperature reheating of food can kill the bacteria and prevent illness.
Health officials are urging the public to take precautions, particularly those who consume deli meats and other processed foods. Individuals are advised to ensure that these foods are properly heated before consumption and to maintain rigorous food safety practices to reduce the risk of listeriosis.
As the CDC continues to investigate the outbreak, they are working to identify the specific source of the listeria contamination and to implement measures to prevent further cases.
