Russia pledged continued support for Cuba on Thursday as tensions between Havana and the United States continue to rise. Kremlin Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would provide Cuba with “active support” amid increasing U.S. pressure on the island nation.
The comments came after the U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro related to the 1996 deaths of four people connected to civilian rescue flights.
Speaking during a briefing in Moscow, Zakharova said Russia stood in “full solidarity” with Cuba against what she described as outside interference, intimidation, sanctions, and political pressure. She accused Washington of intensifying economic measures aimed at weakening Cuba, including new restrictions introduced earlier this month targeting foreign companies operating on the island.
