Temu Fined $232 Million By EU For Selling Of Illegal Products

The European Union has fined Chinese-owned online retailer Temu $232 million after regulators found illegal and potentially dangerous products, including unsafe baby toys and defective chargers listed for sale on the platform.

The penalty follows a nearly two-year investigation under the Digital Services Act, which requires major online platforms to better monitor and remove illegal or harmful content. Officials said additional penalties could still be imposed in the coming months.

The European Commission said Temu “failed to diligently identify, analyse and assess the systemic risks” posed by products sold on its marketplace and the potential danger to consumers.

Temu has until August 28 to submit an action plan addressing the concerns. Regulators are expected to decide within two months whether the company has taken sufficient steps to comply with the Digital Services Act.
