Three hikers were killed after Mount Dukono erupted on a remote island in Indonesia on Thursday.
Roughly 20 climbers had begun ascending the nearly 1,355-meter (4,445-foot) volcano on the island of Halmahera earlier that day before becoming stranded when the volcano erupted at approximately 7:41 a.m. local time.
By Friday afternoon authorities said 14 climbers including seven foreign nationals had been safely evacuated, though five of those rescued suffered injuries. Search and rescue crews continued operations for additional hikers believed to still be making their way down the mountain.
