Arcadia Mayor Charged Resigns Over Chinese Agent Charge

Eileen Wang has resigned as mayor of Arcadia after being charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with acting as an illegal agent of China.

According to the Arcadia City Council, Wang stepped down from her position on Monday after agreeing to plead guilty to the felony charge.

Federal prosecutors allege Wang acted under the direction of Chinese officials, including by distributing pro-Beijing articles without registering with the U.S. government as required by law.

Wang could face up to 10 years in prison. In a statement released through her attorneys, Jason Liang and Brian Sun, she said she “apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life.”
