Germany & Poland Sign Bilateral Defence Agreement

Germany and Poland signed a new defense cooperation agreement on Wednesday aimed at strengthening military ties and coordination, despite the countries’ complex shared history.

The deal comes at a time of heightened tensions with Russia and ongoing uncertainty over long-term U.S. security commitments in Europe. Both sides say the agreement is intended to deepen defense collaboration and improve Europe’s overall military readiness.

During a press conference in Warsaw, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of acknowledging history while focusing on future cooperation. “We are not forgetting the past,” he said alongside German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. “But the politics of the future, development and security are our obligation.”

Germany has been working to expand and modernize its armed forces, the Bundeswehr, after years of underinvestment, with the goal of becoming a leading conventional military power within NATO’s European framework.

Meanwhile, Poland has emerged as a key logistics hub for support to Ukraine and has significantly increased its own defense spending, making it an increasingly important strategic partner in the region.
