Meta Settles Landmark Child Harm Case For $18 Billion
Meta announced Wednesday it has agreed to pay $16.7 billion to settle claims from 29 state attorneys general who accused the company of intentionally designing Facebook and Instagram to be addictive and harmful to young people's mental health. The proposed settlement would require Meta to add daily usage limits and nighttime restrictions for teens, strengthen age-verification measures to keep children off its platforms, and provide more tools for parents.
California could receive between $1.5 billion and $2.1 billion if the settlement is approved, while Texas was not part of the agreement. California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the deal a major step toward making social media safer for children.
