Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States will deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland.
The announcement came just one week after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth halted a previously planned troop rotation to Poland. At the time, the Defense Department said the move reflected frustration with European allies that had “not stepped up when America needed them.”
Trump, however, said the new deployment was tied to his relationship with Poland’s newly elected president, Karol Nawrocki. In a social media post, Trump said he was “proud to endorse” Nawrocki and cited their relationship while announcing the troop deployment.
Poland has remained a major hub for military and humanitarian aid flowing into neighboring Ukraine during the ongoing war with Russia.
