U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump on Monday. In her 93-page ruling, Cannon declared that the appointment and funding of Special Counsel Jack Smith were "unlawful" and "unconstitutional," citing that Smith had not been appointed by the President nor confirmed by Congress. The decision was announced on the first day of the Republican National Convention and was quickly celebrated by Trump.
A spokesperson for Special Counsel Smith confirmed that they will appeal Cannon's ruling, pending authorization from the Justice Department.
Despite this victory, former President Trump continues to face legal challenges in the Georgia election interference case.
