House Passes Short-Term Funding Bill To Prevent Shutdown
The House voted 370-48 on Tuesday to pass a short-term funding bill that will keep the federal government operating through December 11, avoiding a potential shutdown when current funding expires at the end of September. The Senate already approved the measure, so it now heads to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.
The temporary measure largely keeps federal spending at current levels and gives lawmakers more time to negotiate full-year funding for the 2027 fiscal year. The bill also includes funding for areas such as disaster relief, housing assistance and WIC, while blocking some additional funding requested by the White House.
The agreement does not resolve the larger fight over federal spending. Republicans are pushing for major increases in defense spending, while Democrats have opposed some of the administration's proposed spending priorities. The new deadline also pushes the next major funding battle until after the November midterm elections.
