US Court Rules Google Does Not Have To Break Up Its Ad Business
A federal judge in Virginia has rejected the U.S. Justice Department’s request to force Google to sell its online advertising exchange, AdX, allowing the company to keep a key part of its advertising business. Instead, Judge Leonie Brinkema ordered Google to make changes to how its ad technology operates, including measures designed to give competitors greater access.
The ruling comes after Brinkema found in 2025 that Google illegally monopolized parts of the digital advertising market and used its control to limit competition. The DOJ had argued that Google should be forced to sell AdX because of its past conduct, while Google said a forced sale would be disruptive and technically difficult.
The decision is a major win for Google because it avoids a breakup of its ad-tech business. However, Google will still face court-ordered restrictions, with the full details of the changes expected to be released later this month.
