The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that states can ban transgender girls from girls' school sports teams, handing conservative-led states a major victory in one of the country's most closely watched legal battles over transgender rights.
The justices overturned lower court rulings that had sided with transgender students challenging the laws, finding that states may restrict participation in girls' sports based on biological sex. The decision allows similar laws already passed in more than two dozen states to remain in effect and is expected to influence future legal challenges across the country.
