Iran says it plans to introduce service fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, in exchange for providing maritime security and related services, rather than charging traditional transit tolls.
An Iranian official said the proposed system would involve compensation for services coordinated with Oman, including navigation assistance, search and rescue operations, safety and security support, and environmental cleanup in the event of pollution incidents.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister said the framework being developed would comply with international law, but acknowledged that “they will not be 100% pleasing to some countries.”
