The jihadist terrorist organization ISIS has claimed responsibility for an assault on a Shiite-Muslim mosque in Oman, a Gulf Arab state. The attack resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including three suicide bombers, and left over two dozen people injured, including four Omani first responders.
The incident occurred at the Imam Ali mosque during Ashura, the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, which holds deep significance for Shiite Muslims.
This violence has deeply impacted Oman, a country previously spared from the sectarian conflicts that have afflicted other nations in the Middle East.
