Peter Magyar, 45, was officially sworn in as Hungary’s new prime minister nearly a month after parliamentary elections brought an end to Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in power.
Magyar’s center-right Tisza Party secured a commanding parliamentary majority, winning 141 out of 199 seats.
Speaking on Saturday, Magyar urged Hungarians to “step through the gate of regime change” as his new government prepares to take office.
One of his administration’s top priorities is reaching an agreement with the European Union to unlock roughly $20 billion in frozen funding. The funds had been withheld amid concerns over declining rule of law protections and worsening human rights conditions under Orbán’s government.
