South Korea Detains Dissident Who Fled China

South Korea has detained Chinese dissident Dong Guangping after he reportedly fled China aboard a rubber boat and was discovered in South Korean waters on Monday night.

Dong, a 68-year-old former police officer turned human rights activist, has been imprisoned multiple times in China for his activism, including participating in events commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. He has previously attempted to flee China on at least three occasions but was returned each time.

Human Rights in China, a New York-based advocacy group, urged South Korean authorities not to deport Dong, warning that he could face persecution and torture if sent back to China.
